Strong police forces have been deployed at the courts of the former Evelpidon School and outside the Athens Police Headquarters (GADA), as the transfer of those arrested in connection with the Marfin case to the prosecutor is expected.
Police arrests in the Marfin case
It is recalled that the Hellenic Police proceeded with the arrest of two individuals in connection with the Marfin case. According to reports, a third suspect is also being charged and is still being sought, with an arrest warrant having been issued against them as well. According to an official statement by the authorities, “an operation by the Counter-Terrorism Division (DAOE) is underway as part of ongoing investigations to arrest individuals involved in the arson attack that took place on May 5, 2010, at a bank branch on Stadiou Street in Athens, during a demonstration, resulting in the deaths of three employees.”
Investigations into the case are ongoing, and according to reports, two 42-year-old men and a 46-year-old woman — who appears to have played a supporting role — have been identified. The third suspect still being sought is reported to be a woman currently believed to be in the United Kingdom.
The case file for the Marfin incident is being handled by the 3rd standing investigative judge. Reports indicate that new evidence gathered during the police investigation contributed to the identification of the individuals who were arrested.
It is recalled that on May 5, 2010 — three days before the ratification of the first bailout memorandum — three employees of Marfin Bank on Stadiou Street lost their lives in a fire caused by a Molotov cocktail arson attack. The victims were Angeliki Papathanasopoulou, who was pregnant with her first child, Epaminondas Tsakalis, and Paraskevi Zoulia.
