The wildfire that broke out on Friday afternoon (3/7) in a rural-forest area in Spathvouni, Korinthia, has been brought under control with no active front remaining, following a large-scale operation by the Fire Service under particularly difficult conditions, as strong winds were blowing through the area.

The fire broke out shortly after 4:00 PM, triggering an immediate mobilization of firefighting forces. Initially, 60 firefighters were deployed with three foot patrol teams from the 9th EMODE unit, 15 vehicles, four aircraft and three helicopters, one of which served in a coordination role.
As the fire continued to spread, reinforcements arrived significantly. At peak operations, 85 firefighters were on the ground with three teams from the 9th EMODE unit and 21 vehicles, while eight aircraft and four helicopters carried out continuous water drops from the air, with one helicopter performing aerial coordination duties.
Water tankers from the Peloponnese Region also joined the firefighting effort, while the Region’s “IKAROS” team operated a drone over the affected area. At the same time, the ESKEDIK command center maintained a continuous real-time view of the fire’s progression through a drone equipped with both optical and thermal cameras.

Emergency 112 alert activated
Due to the severity of the situation, an emergency 112 alert message was sent at 5:00 PM to residents in the Spathvouni area.

After a hours-long, coordinated operation, the fire was brought under control with no active front remaining, with ground forces staying in the area to tackle any potential flare-ups. Meanwhile, the Korinthia Arson Investigation Unit has been deployed to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire.
