The dramatic scenes that unfolded in Kallithea when a fire broke out in an apartment building — and a 75-year-old woman jumped from her balcony to escape the flames — left onlookers breathless. As the fire engulfed the building, a crowd had gathered in the street below and ultimately managed to catch the woman and save her life as she leaped from the balcony.
It all began when the 75-year-old became trapped on her balcony with no way out. Faced with an impossible choice, she made the agonizing decision to jump in order to escape the flames that had consumed her apartment in Kallithea.
Within the first minutes of the fire, dozens of residents gathered at the scene, watching the woman’s every move. They urged her to jump immediately, as her life was in grave danger. As the blaze intensified, the building was swallowed by flames and the apartment windows shattered from the heat, with the fire closing in dangerously on the elderly woman.
Kallithea apartment fire: The rescue of the 75-year-old woman
A delivery driver passing through the area heard the commotion and stopped to help. He urged the woman to jump from the burning building, reassuring her that he would do everything he could to catch her. She leaped from the balcony and fell into the arms of the gathered crowd, who formed a human cushion — a moment that proved decisive in saving her life.
Meanwhile, a large contingent of firefighters and ambulances arrived at the scene and provided first aid to those injured. The woman’s husband managed to escape on his own, making his way out through the garage door. Shortly afterward, the elderly couple’s children arrived at the scene, visibly in shock. Their son, clutching the family’s small dog in his arms and supported by firefighters, broke down in tears.
Daughter of the rescued couple: “We are devastated — there is nothing left”
“We are all devastated. There is nothing left in the house — everything burned,” the couple’s daughter told MEGA television. “My mother’s hair is singed, her entire left arm is burned, her face is injured, and she’s limping,” she added.
“What matters is that my parents are alive,” she said, expressing her gratitude to everyone who helped:
“I want to thank every single person — all the neighbors — who stood by my parents.”
The 75-year-old was transferred to hospital suffering from respiratory problems as well as injuries to her arm sustained during the dramatic rescue. The delivery driver who played a key role in catching her also required medical attention, having suffered a mild ankle sprain in the process.
Today, the family is trying to put this harrowing ordeal behind them — one that, thanks to extraordinary human solidarity and the immediate response of ordinary citizens, ended with their lives intact.
