Health authorities in Heraklion have been put on high alert following the detection of a case of bacterial meningitis in a student at the vocational school of Moires, resulting in the closure of the educational institution on Monday, May 11.
The decision was made by the Municipality of Phaistos, following the mayor’s directive, with the aim of protecting students and teachers, as well as implementing all necessary health measures. Disinfection is expected to be carried out in the school premises, while the competent services are in constant cooperation with health authorities to monitor the situation. As emphasized, all prescribed protocols will be followed to ensure the safe reopening of the school, while further updates will be provided regarding any developments.

Bacterial meningitis is a serious infection that affects the meninges, the tissues surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Transmission occurs through respiratory droplets, mainly through close contact between individuals. According to experts, the main suspected symptoms include high fever, severe headache and neck stiffness, while it may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, rash or consciousness disorders.
The incubation period of the disease ranges from 2 to 10 days, but usually appears within 3 to 4 days of infection. Authorities recommend staying calm, remaining vigilant and immediately contacting a doctor if symptoms appear.
