A 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck today, Friday (24/4), at 06:18 in Lasithi, Crete, with the epicenter located in the sea area south of Goudouras. The focal depth was recorded at 9.7 kilometers, according to the Revised Solution of the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens. The mayor of Siteia, Georgios Zervakis, spoke to parapolitika.gr about the seismic activity.

Siteia mayor on Crete earthquake: “No problems recorded”
The mayor of Siteia told parapolitika.gr: “No problems have been recorded.” At the same time, precautionary checks were carried out at local schools, with unit directors remaining at their posts to ensure student safety.

Continuous aftershocks
It is worth noting that aftershock activity within the first hour following the earthquake was significant, with at least 8 smaller tremors recorded. The strongest was a 3.8 magnitude aftershock that occurred again in a marine area, east of the 5.7 magnitude epicenter, just 10 minutes after the main quake. This was followed by aftershocks measuring 3.5 and 3.6 magnitude, while at 07:59 the latest aftershock of 3.8 magnitude was recorded.
