The VIANEX Group officially inaugurated its new Research & Development Center on Tuesday, June 23, at the Patras Industrial Area — a strategic investment of €12.47 million that significantly strengthens Greece’s pharmaceutical research capabilities and contributes to the further growth of the Greek pharmaceutical industry. The event was attended by senior government officials, regional authorities, and business leaders, including Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis, Deputy Development Minister Lazaros Tsavdaridis, Deputy Culture Minister Iasonas Fotillas, Governor of Western Greece Nektarios Farmakis, Mayor of Western Achaia Grigoris Alexopoulos, and President of the Panhellenic Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association Theodoros Tryfon.
The investment was carried out under Greece’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0,” co-funded by the European Union through the NextGenerationEU initiative. It marks a new era for health research and innovation, positioning Greece as a regional hub for the development of high-value pharmaceutical products.
Leveraging cutting-edge technologies, the new Center has the capacity to develop and produce multiple pharmaceutical dosage forms. More than 20 generic formulations and new pharmaceutical forms are already in development. The Center also actively participates in national and international research programs, including the European GENz-trials project, which introduces an innovative clinical trial framework powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI). Bioequivalence studies are also conducted at the Center, ensuring that all pharmaceutical products meet the highest international standards of quality and safety.

VIANEX’s new research center in Patras
The new Research & Development Center is already staffed by 20 highly specialized scientists and creates the foundation for developing innovative pharmaceutical forms, attracting top scientific talent, and expanding participation in international research programs and collaborations.
VIANEX has maintained a presence in Patras since 1999 through its Plant D facility in the Patras Industrial Area, serving as a longstanding pillar of employment and economic development for the local community. Plant D is recognized as one of the most modern and specialized cephalosporin manufacturing facilities in Europe. With the addition of the new Research & Development Center, the Group further strengthens its footprint in Western Greece, creating a fully integrated ecosystem encompassing production, research, and innovation.
In his address, Mr. Dimitris Giannakopoulos, Chairman and CEO of the VIANEX Group, stated: “Our investment in the new Research & Development Center reflects our enduring commitment to investing in Greece, in science, and in its people. We are laying the groundwork for the development of innovative pharmaceutical solutions with a global outlook, while simultaneously strengthening the competitiveness of the Greek pharmaceutical industry and its contribution to the national economy. Research and innovation are the core pillars upon which we are building the future of VIANEX.”
Mr. Konstantinos Panagoulias, Vice Chairman of the VIANEX Group, stated: “This investment is part of VIANEX Group’s broader strategy to drive innovation, boost domestic production, expand our international reach, and further develop our portfolio across the healthcare sector. The decision to locate the Center in Patras was based both on VIANEX’s already strong presence in the region and on the city’s significant scientific and developmental advantages — including a dynamic academic and industrial environment that can meaningfully support the growth of pharmaceutical manufacturing and research in Greece.”

Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis on VIANEX
Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis stated: “This investment represents a particularly significant milestone for the Greek pharmaceutical industry. This is not merely a new facility for the VIANEX Group — it is a strategic piece of infrastructure that enhances Greece’s competitiveness at both the European and international level. Despite the ongoing challenges facing the sector, such as the clawback framework, the direction remains clear: toward stronger investment and sustainable growth. We thank the VIANEX Group for its tangible contribution to the advancement of the industry and for being a source of pride for Patras and for Greece as a whole.”
The new Research & Development Center marks another important step in the VIANEX Group’s strategy to bridge scientific knowledge with production and social value. Through this investment, the Group reaffirms its commitment to developing safe, effective, and high-quality therapies, cementing its leading role in the Greek pharmaceutical industry and its dedication to advancing innovation in healthcare.
