The cryptic post by Nikos Karahalios on Saturday evening on X raised questions as it “captured” potential political developments with the president of the “Tempi 2023” Association Maria Karystianou in the background. However, she “distanced herself” from him, emphasizing that she was “speechless” about what was being reported and spoke of “spreading fake news.” Indeed, Mr. Karahalios clarified through a new post that “Maria is right” and that “no one said that The Wave is a party, let alone ‘Karystianou’s party’,” stating that anyone who refers to it that way “displays either their well-intentioned wish or their malicious identification of her with a political movement that she herself continuously denies.”

The former strategic planning advisor to Kostas Karamanlis speaking to parapolitika.gr argues that “The Wave is a catalyst, an encouragement, an invitation and not a provocation. It is an organizational platform that wants to give flesh and bones to society’s demand for social and consequently political change.” According to Mr. Karahalios, it is “a positive action whose purpose is to bring together a series of dynamics that have developed from the three major problems of the last decade. Namely the tragedy in Mati, coronavirus, and the Tempi tragedy.”
He further maintains that “The Wave” is “a movement of ordinary citizens and not technocrats. It’s us and not the elite. Mrs. Karystianou is my friend and has asked for my technocratic knowledge on communication and political matters. In all her speeches she says ‘move, do something.’ Society wants to express itself, I will create a platform for people who don’t find a voice in mainstream media to express themselves.”
