The leadership of PASOK finds itself at the center of internal party pressures as the much-anticipated party congress remains without a specific date. Although Nikos Androulakis proceeded to announce the bodies that will guide the process, the strategic silence regarding the timeline is intensifying internal confrontations.
Delays and uncertainty over congress committee meeting
Initial estimates for convening the Secretariat of the Central Organizing Committee within the current week proved incorrect. New information shifts the possibility of a meeting to next week, though without definitive confirmation. The upcoming congress committee meeting is expected to settle procedural matters for the congress. However, there are doubts about whether Androulakis will propose a specific date, despite his public commitment to the Central Committee in February 2025 to hold the congress by autumn.
Internal opposition strategies
Members of the internal opposition express serious concern about the possible indefinite postponement of the congress. Faced with this situation, they are considering two different approaches:
- Immediate pressure on the leadership during the first meeting of the congress committee, demanding a binding decision on the congress timeline.
- Strategic waiting, allowing the leadership to expose itself further before the party base.
Both versions contain elements of a blame game, the familiar practice of attributing responsibility to the opponent.
Internal opposition figures believe the PASOK leader wants to drag the congress as close as possible to the national elections, so as not to open a can of worms and avoid putting sensitive issues like government coalitions to a vote.
After all, the PASOK leader realizes that the upcoming congress won’t be a walk in the park like previous ones. For the first time, he will face well-organized blocs led by figures who contested the presidency in last October’s internal party elections.
