The Cabinet Council approved the strengthening of the public sector with nearly 20,000 new permanent civil servants for 2026 in its latest session. Interior Minister Theodoros Livanios and Deputy Minister Vivi Charalampogiannou presented, as has become customary every September, the annual recruitment plan for public sector personnel. Currently, the total number of permanent employees (regular staff) stands at 568,135, with the steady 1:1 rule in effect – one permanent employee hired for every permanent employee who leaves.
Total requests from ministries, agencies and organizations reached 35,000, with 19,489 ultimately approved. Priority was given first and foremost to strengthening the National Health System with 5,228 positions, of which 5,000 are medical, nursing and other personnel across all Health Ministry structures. This is followed by National Defense, with approval of all requests from military academies (1,517) plus additional reinforcement for NIMTS and Pension Funds, as well as Teaching Research Staff (DEP) at military higher education institutions. Local Government saw an increase from last year’s allocation and one of the strongest reinforcements since 2020. The strengthening of the Fire Service and Hellenic Police continues, with 950 positions approved in training schools (probationary constables and sub-inspectors) and 626 special guards.
