The community of Igoumenitsa remains in shock following the tragic death of 11-year-old Maximos, with residents and classmates leaving flowers and candles at the spot where his life was so unjustly lost. The child was struck by a 56-year-old female driver while crossing the street to go home, just seconds after his mother had dropped him off by car and witnessed the tragic loss.
Igoumenitsa: Police examine video footage of the tragedy
Police have video footage showing how the tragedy unfolded. According to a report by Panos Sobolou on the show “Truths with Zina,” the 56-year-old woman was driving at low speed. She slowed down her vehicle just before the crosswalk, but when the child began crossing the road on foot rather than on his scooter, she accelerated and struck him. She appeared to be startled and made a sudden maneuver, resulting in dragging the boy and trapping him between the wheel of her vehicle and the protective barrier.
“My child, my child,” screamed Maximos’s mother who witnessed absolute horror unfold before her eyes, according to witness testimonies.
It’s a tragic irony that the driver is also a mother of twins, close to Maximos’s age.
“He was an angel”
Residents of the area cannot believe the tragedy that occurred in broad daylight in their neighborhood. Everyone speaks of him as an “angel,” a cheerful and bright child, and they cannot hold back their tears. “We are very saddened and heartbroken that we will never see Maximos again,” they tell the show’s camera.
Maximos’s school did not operate today as a sign of mourning for his tragic loss.
