Scenes that cause shock and terror unfolded in the early hours of Saturday (20/09) at the old harbor of Rethymno, starring young men who transformed one of the city’s most touristic streets into a battlefield. The video from the violent clash, which circulated on the internet, shows the harsh reality: brutal punches, kicks and moments that “froze” passersby.

Rethymno: Scenes of raw violence in the city center
According to witness testimonies and footage captured by cameras, the clash began shortly after 05:00 in the early morning. Young men began arguing and soon the tension escalated into a beating. One of those involved, wearing a white shirt, appears to viciously kick another young man in the genitals, while he was trying to help his injured friend.
Savage violence in Rethymno shocks
The scene becomes even more shocking when, in another part of the incident, a young man is launched head-first into a shop window, causing him to lose consciousness for several minutes. Panic spread immediately, with those present shouting for help. The clash only ended when three police patrol cars and an ambulance arrived at the scene, which transported the injured person to the hospital.
The shadow of violence among minors
The incident in Rethymno is not an isolated event. The same week, Patras was shocked by another brutal beating among minors. On Eleftherios Venizelos Street, three minors –two 15-year-olds and one 16-year-old– attacked a peer with incredible violence. The 16-year-old suffered serious injuries: broken jaw and nose, trauma that required immediate transfer from Karamandaneio and Rio hospital to the Children’s Hospital “Aglaia Kyriakou” in Athens for surgical intervention. Patras Security proceeded with arrests not only of the minors but also their parents, charged with neglect of supervision.
A phenomenon that causes concern
The increase in such violent incidents in Crete and other major Greek cities has caused intense concern. Violence among minors, which was once considered a rare phenomenon, tends to take on worrying dimensions, leaving behind injured young people and communities wondering where the boundaries were lost. The video from Rethymno serves as a harsh reminder that the need for substantial solutions and interventions is more urgent than ever.
