Romania was forced to scramble F-16 fighter jets after a Russian attack on Ukraine, just half a mile from the territory of the NATO ally state. The country’s Ministry of National Defense confirmed in a post on X that Russia carried out a drone attack, essentially right next to its border.
Romania: “Russian forces launched a massive drone attack near our border”
“On the night of August 5-6, Russian forces launched a massive drone attack on civilian infrastructure in the Ismail area, Ukraine, near the border with Romania,” emphasized Romania’s Ministry of Defense in a post on X.
“The ministry’s radar systems detected aerial targets in Ukrainian airspace, near Tulcea County. At 1:10 a.m., the population in the northern part of the county was notified via RO-Alert,” the ministry added. RO-Alert is Romania’s official emergency warning system.
The Romanian Defense Ministry stated that two F-16 fighter jets took off “to monitor national airspace,” but no “intruders” were detected. The ministry said it would conduct checks in the area and inform NATO allies.
The drones reportedly struck oil and natural gas pipelines at the Orlivka facility in Odessa. Flames and smoke clouds were visible along the Danube River.

It should be noted that just hours after the attack, US envoy Steve Witkoff and Russian leader Vladimir Putin met at the Kremlin, in the shadow of Trump’s ultimatum to Moscow to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine.
Kremlin foreign policy advisor Yuri Ushakov, present at the meeting, characteristically stated that “we received some signals from Trump, and we sent some as well.” The Russian official spoke of a “useful and constructive meeting between President Putin and the American special envoy.”
The talks lasted three hours, according to Russian media reports.
