From the ferry “PANAGIA PARAVOYNIΩTISSA”, which ran aground on dry land at Styra in Evia, the evacuation of the last passengers is being completed, with the crew remaining until the end, until the inspection is completed and it is ensured that no passenger has remained in the areas of the grounded vessel.
It is noted that a diver is already inspecting the vessel to determine whether a breach has been caused and whether it is safe, so that it can be detached and safely transported to the port. The passengers are all in good health, while an investigation is expected to begin into what actually happened and how the ship ended up on the “Glaros” dry land at Nea Styra. According to the Coast Guard, there is no listing, nor water ingress.
It is recalled that this afternoon an alarm sounded when a ferry operating the Nea Styra – Agia Marina route ran aground on the Glaros rocky islet, about ten minutes after its departure from the port. On board the vessel were 105 passengers and 9 crew members. The operation to transport them began immediately with the help of private boats and the passengers were safely transferred to the port of Nea Styra. Three Coast Guard vessels, private boats and another passenger – car ferry rushed to the scene to assist in the process. The ferry had minor water ingress, which has stopped and pumping is taking place.
Passenger complaint: No information was given
Passengers complain to “MEGA” that there was no information from the loudspeakers about what happened while they say that life jackets were not given to everyone from the start.
“At 10 minutes we shook and the ferry stopped on dry land. It has taken a list. Small boats have come and are filling with people. Everyone has life jackets. They had not informed us what it was about. We are returning to Styra with small boats,” said one passenger.
