The warning that “what we can expect from here on out is only price increases” for fuel was issued on Tuesday morning (15/09) by Giorgos Asmatoglou, former president of the Panhellenic Federation of Fuel Retailers. Speaking on Parapolitika 90.1 during the “First Morning” show with journalist Alexandros Klossas, Mr. Asmatoglou stated that fuel prices are “burning” consumers.

“The de-escalation in the previous period didn’t bring much relief — there was simply a stagnation at a specific price point, around €2, but prices never actually dropped. In major urban centers like Athens and Thessaloniki, the average price stands at €2.15 per liter, while on the islands, unleaded gasoline and diesel are pushing past €2.50 per liter. In mainland Greece, remote areas are seeing prices between €2.35 and €2.40,” Mr. Asmatoglou continued.

“What we can expect is only price increases, because even today we are still seeing increases that carried over from last week. We’re seeing a bigger rise in diesel and a smaller one in unleaded gasoline — and this has been the trend ever since supply imbalances emerged. On one hand, supplies are not being delivered in sufficient quantities, and on the other, they are arriving in small batches, which creates price differences between fuel types. For this week as well, forecasts are pointing upward,” he added.
Finally, addressing heating oil specifically, Giorgos Asmatoglou stated: “If heating oil were available today, with the current reduced excise tax rate, the price would be €1.97 per liter. Last year, we started the season at €1.10 and closed it out at €1.80 in April.”
