With 403 people still missing, the death toll from the devastating muddy torrents in Nepal is unlikely to remain at 95, as the deadly floods swept away everything in their path. Notably, the majority of those missing are foreign nationals — 341 people from 26 different countries. According to available figures, more than 130 Indians, 47 Americans, and 12 British nationals are unaccounted for. Nepal’s emergency response apparatus is on full alert, with rescue teams deploying helicopters to the area near the Bhotekoshi River on the border with China — a destination popular with mountaineers, trekkers, and pilgrims alike. Nepal’s Foreign Minister has attributed the start of what appears to be a national tragedy — occurring nearly a year after the remarkable uprising in which mostly young protesters went as far as setting fire to parliament and burning ministers’ homes — to a 4.4-magnitude earthquake that triggered a landslide, blocking the river.

Nepal: Helicopters unable to land as water levels soar
Water levels rose so dramatically that helicopters were unable to land in Syabrubesi and Timure. Commander Narendra Pariyar urged all residents living along the banks of the Bhotekoshi River to immediately move to higher ground.

“It all happened suddenly,” said a witness speaking to Onlinekhabar. “We heard a tremendous noise, like a volcanic explosion. People started screaming and running.” The landslide also struck the Gyirong port in China, according to Xinhua, blocking roads and disrupting telecommunications and power supply in Shigatse, near the Nepali border.

Nepal’s Ministry of Energy announced that approximately 430 megawatts of electricity supply had been affected, primarily from hydroelectric power plants. Prime Minister Balendra Shah confirmed that police and military forces are actively supporting search and rescue operations. “Instructions have been issued… to relocate people living in low-lying areas to safer locations,” he stated. “Those living along the riverbanks must exercise extra caution and remain on high alert.”

At the same time, Nepal’s Prime Minister called on citizens to “remain united.” “I ask you to be patient. The government has fully taken charge of rescue operations, medical care, as well as shelter and food. In the face of such a disaster, we must all stand together,” Shah said.
European Union activates Copernicus satellite system for Nepal
The European Union announced on Wednesday, August 26, that it had activated the Copernicus satellite monitoring system to assist rescue teams in the aftermath of the deadly floods in Nepal, and expressed its readiness to provide further assistance. “Copernicus has been activated to help map the affected areas in Nepal and support relief operations on the ground,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote on X. “We are ready to provide additional European assistance,” she added.
