In a social media post today (17/08), Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis reacted strongly to a photograph circulating online that falsely depicted him alongside a woman identified as the prosecutor in the Kolonos case.
As confirmed by a fact-check conducted by Ellinika Hoaxes, the woman in the photograph is not prosecutor Maria-Eleni Nikolou, but Maria Kokkoraki, a general director at a law firm. The photo was taken at an event held in honor of Adonis Georgiadis in Thessaloniki in September 2019. “Here we go again with the same toxicity and lies,” Georgiadis commented pointedly.
What triggered Adonis Georgiadis’ reaction
Georgiadis also warned that the period leading up to the upcoming elections will see an even greater spread of fake and toxic news. “I’m afraid that until the elections, they will drown us in fake, toxic news,” he stated, adding that one of the questions Greek voters will be asked to answer at the ballot box is “whether they want to reward all of this.”
The disputed photograph had spread widely across social media platforms with the false claim that it showed Adonis Georgiadis alongside prosecutor Maria-Eleni Nikolou. However, according to the Ellinika Hoaxes fact-check, there is no evidence to support any such connection.
