The president of Guinea, Mamadi Doumbouya, has returned to his country following a brief family vacation in Greece — a trip that sparked widespread speculation about his health and triggered political reactions at home. Doumbouya arrived back in Conakry on Friday, August 14, and was received at Ahmed Sékou Touré International Airport with an official ceremony attended by representatives of the country’s political, military, and diplomatic leadership.
Among those present at the reception were the president of the National Assembly, the prime minister, cabinet members, heads of state institutions, senior military officers, as well as representatives of diplomatic missions and international organizations.
Doumbouya’s message ahead of his return
A few days before returning to Guinea, Doumbouya addressed the nation, reassuring citizens that his commitment to the country remains absolute, despite the brief rest he took with his wife. “Guinea is moving forward, its institutions are functioning, and nothing will deter us from our determination to lead the nation toward the goals we have set together,” he stated.
The official announcement of his Greece vacation
Guinea’s presidency had officially announced Doumbouya’s departure for a short family vacation in Greece.
Upon his departure from Conakry, the president was seen off by Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah, senior presidential officials, representatives of state institutions, the armed forces, and the diplomatic corps.
Subsequently, the General Staff of the Armed Forces issued a statement reaffirming its “unwavering loyalty” to the president and the people of Guinea, while calling on citizens to remain calm in the face of circulating information and rumors.
Health rumors surrounding the president
Doumbouya’s absence coincided with growing speculation in Guinea about the state of his health, fueled by his limited public appearances in the preceding period.
The government had sought to ease concerns, stating that the president was undergoing routine medical check-ups and had been advised to take a period of rest.
His return to Conakry took place against a backdrop of political tension, with the opposition criticizing the government and calling for “an end to the dictatorship.” There have also been reports of discontent within parts of the armed forces.
From the 2021 coup to the presidency
Mamadi Doumbouya came to power in Guinea following the military coup of September 2021, which ousted then-president Alpha Condé. He was elected president of the country in late 2025. His absence and vacation in Greece provided fresh fuel for political controversy, with the opposition renewing its calls for “an end to the dictatorship.”
