Images of President Emmanuel Macron enjoying water sports during his summer vacation have sparked a wave of public outrage in France, as the country battles raging wildfires, record-breaking temperatures, and severe drought.
Emmanuel Macron: The photo that sparked a national backlash
The image generating the most controversy is a Paris Match cover photo showing Emmanuel Macron riding a jet ski at Fort Brégançon, the official presidential summer residence on the French Riviera. The photo was taken on August 3rd but published only recently — right in the middle of a new heatwave and wildfire crisis sweeping across the country.
The opposition has been quick to seize on the image. Socialist Party leader Olivier Faure sharply remarked that while “France is burning, the president is having fun on a jet ski,” while the Greens described the image as completely disconnected from the reality facing a country enduring a brutal summer. The backlash is further fuelled by the visible economic hardship many French citizens are facing, with rising costs limiting their own ability to afford a summer holiday.
The Élysée Palace, however, has pushed back, insisting that Macron had not given permission for the photos to be taken and was unaware he was being photographed.
