A tragic road accident, in which a bus collided with a stationary truck, occurred in the community of Nommale in Cameroon, leaving at least 16 people dead and nearly 40 injured. According to state broadcaster CRTV, the crash took place on the national highway connecting Yaoundé to the western regions of the African country. The tragedy deepens with the revelation that seven of the victims were members of the same family, who were travelling together to attend a funeral. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
Cameroon crash: What caused the accident
The reasons and circumstances behind the crash are now under scrutiny. Marcial Missimikin, director of Sécuroute, an NGO dedicated to promoting road safety, highlighted several possible factors that may have contributed to the accident — including excessive speed, driver fatigue, and the dangerous positioning of the stationary truck on the road. Additional factors such as reckless driving and the poor condition of the road network have also been cited. Cameroon’s Ministry of Transport reports that approximately 1,500 people lose their lives every year in road accidents across the country.
