Volunteer firefighter Nikos Nikolis spoke to ERT3 and the program “Perimetros,” stressing that he experienced harrowing moments during the wildfire in Siviri, Chalkidiki. “The worst night of my life,” said Mr. Nikolis, describing what he lived through. “The fire was chasing us. Along with all the OFKATH crew, we carried out every order we were given to the letter. Beyond that, we hadn’t slept in 24 hours and were hoping to get 1–2 hours of rest. The flames erupted suddenly. You didn’t know where they were coming from. It was hell,” he said emphatically, adding that there were moments when he feared for his life.

“We managed to escape — we were warned just in time. We had to leave within seconds. Not just us, but many others too. The fire was coming from every direction, the wind kept shifting and we had no idea where to go or what to do,” he recounted, describing the desperate moments faced by all those operating at the scene.
