The testimony of a motorcyclist who came face-to-face with death is sending shockwaves across Greece, after he found himself on a collision course with a tanker truck that had crossed into oncoming traffic while attempting to overtake at a blind spot on a rural road. “If I had been in a car, I wouldn’t have been able to avoid it,” said the motorcyclist, who watched the heavy vehicle bearing down on him at terrifyingly close range near Lake Plastiras. The incident was captured on video and posted to social media, prompting an immediate response from authorities. The truck driver was identified and, according to a statement issued by the Greek Police (ELAS), was located in Thessaloniki and brought in for questioning by the Thessaloniki Traffic Police Division.

Dangerous overtake by tanker truck – “I was barely squeezing by on my motorbike”
Describing the terrifying moments he experienced when he came face-to-face with the tanker, the rider told ALPHA TV: “I had gone out on my motorbike to shoot a video. As I was heading toward Lake Plastiras, after a couple of specific bends in the road, I suddenly came across the tanker truck. My camera was pointing in a different direction. With my own eyes, of course, I could see it from much further away — that’s the only reason I managed to avoid it.”
“I wasn’t thinking about anything — my mind went completely blank. I just keep saying to myself, something saved me. Honestly, if I had been in a car, I wouldn’t have been able to avoid it, because there wasn’t much room at all. I was really right on the edge with my motorbike,” the rider added.
Tanker truck driver detained by police
The motorcyclist posted the video capturing the truck driver’s reckless maneuver, which triggered an immediate response from authorities who quickly identified the tanker driver. According to ERT, the driver was identified through the transport company he works for. The necessary steps were taken immediately, and the Thessaloniki Traffic Police Division was notified.
Following the identification of the tanker truck driver, authorities located him in Thessaloniki, where he was brought in for questioning by the Thessaloniki Traffic Police Division.
Criminal charges for dangerous driving are being filed against him under Article 290A of the Greek Penal Code, and applicable violations of the Highway Traffic Code are also being formally recorded.
