The Greek government is set to kick into sprint mode from September, with elections on the spring horizon, placing the acceleration of deliverable projects front and center — along with a stronger push to showcase government action to the public. Cabinet ministers have received clear directives from the Prime Minister for the “difficult mission” of the coming months: a more prominent and intensive media presence, particularly in regional outlets, and a stepped-up pace of project delivery across all ministries. Parliamentary activity kicks off on August 24 with the opening of Parliament, while the first major milestone comes at the end of the month — August 26 or 27 — with the second vote on the constitutional revision.
Also heading to the plenary session this autumn is the new state aid bill, set to be submitted to Parliament for a vote in early September. The legislation aims to transform post-disaster state relief from a slow compensation system into a fast, digital recovery mechanism — one with more eligible beneficiaries, greater transparency, and stronger ties to private insurance.
September will also see the launch of the inter-ministerial committee on nuclear energy, whose formation was approved at the July cabinet meeting. The committee is expected to include representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, National Defense, Environment and Energy, Development, Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Maritime Affairs and Island Policy, and Health, with coordination led by Deputy Energy Minister Nikos Tsafos. With this move, the government is opening the door to a broader discussion on the potential inclusion of nuclear energy in the country’s energy mix, with the goal of conducting a scientific and technical assessment to give Greece a comprehensive picture of technological developments, economic parameters, the regulatory framework, and the requirements associated with a potential nuclear program. At the center of Greece’s exploration are Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), a technology that has been attracting growing international interest in recent years.
More broadly, the second half of the year will focus on implementing the full pre-election program of the ruling New Democracy party, with the government picking up the pace both in its legislative work and in rolling out the initiatives outlined in each ministry’s policy blueprints. During the first half of the year, 60% of the milestones scheduled for 2026 were completed, and based on current progress, the completion rate is expected to reach 90% by year’s end. Notably, the proposal submitted by Akis Skertsос for the revision of the Unified Government Policy Plan 2026 includes 37 new initiatives, designed to address emerging needs and strengthen the government’s reform record.
