Firefighting crews continue to battle a rapidly spreading wildfire nightmare in southwestern Spain, forcing the evacuation of approximately 800 people due to shifting winds and difficult terrain, regional authorities announced. More than 600 firefighters and 26 aerial units are involved in the firefighting operations targeting the wildfire that broke out last week in the province of Huelva in Andalusia, clarified regional emergency coordinator Antonio Sanz. “We are facing an extremely difficult, complex and dangerous fire, with weather conditions that give us no room for any respite. This is an endurance battle full of obstacles,” he stressed. “We must be realistic: nothing suggests the fire will be brought under control anytime soon. We still have hours, possibly days, of intensive work ahead of us,” the Spanish official warned.

Major fire in Huelva, Spain: 200,000 acres surrounded by flames
Firefighters worked through the night from Sunday into Monday, creating firebreaks, but difficult terrain and weather conditions slowed their progress, according to authorities. More than 200,000 acres of land are currently surrounded by flames. This figure represents the area enclosed by the fire line and does not mean that the entire surface has burned, according to the same source. Today, the 300 residents of the small village of El Madroño were evacuated from their homes, bringing the total number of people forced to flee due to the fire to 800.
