Six people have lost their lives after a student opened fire at a school in Bangkok, Thailand. Before the attack, the perpetrator had already executed his grandfather and grandmother with 26 bullets. Police announced on Friday (7/8) that a total of 34 shell casings were recovered at the scene.

Timeline of the massacre

The incident took place in the Bang Kruai area of Nonthaburi province, north of Bangkok. The teenage gunman first shot and killed his grandparents using a pistol that belonged to his grandfather. He then proceeded to his high school, where he killed six people — three students and three teachers — according to a police statement.

The perpetrator, aged 14 or 15 and a student at the same school, also died at the scene, local media reported citing authorities. He is believed to have fired 26 shots, while an additional 34 shell casings were found at the crime scene, police said. It remains unclear whether the shooter was killed by police or took his own life. His motive has also not yet been established.

Fifteen students at the Nonthaburi province school, north of the capital, were also injured while trying to flee, Thai Deputy Interior Minister Polapat Suwanathat told public broadcaster Thai PBS.

“This is a terrible incident. It should never have happened,” said Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, adding that “this is precisely why the government does not permit the possession of firearms.”

Shocking eyewitness accounts

Photos published by local media show the perpetrator wearing a purple school uniform and a black crossbody bag, with shell casings visible on the ground.

“I saw thousands of students running out. Some weren’t even wearing shoes,” recounted Thongchai Thanakat, a motorcycle taxi driver who has worked outside the school compound for about twenty years. “I saw the body of a student who had been shot in the head,” he added. “It’s truly heartbreaking.”

An 18-year-old student told Reuters he initially thought he was hearing firecrackers or someone banging on an object. “At first I didn’t believe it was gunshots,” he said. “There were many shots: bang, bang, bang. Then silence. And then they started again,” he described.

It is worth noting that Thailand has one of the highest rates of gun ownership in the region, with an estimated 10 million firearms in circulation — approximately one for every seven residents.
