An unspeakable tragedy has unfolded in Portugal, where an 18-month-old girl lost her life after being left forgotten inside a school bus for approximately eight hours. The incident occurred in the Almada area, in the Setúbal district, and has sent shockwaves through the community, as the child’s absence went completely unnoticed by nursery staff throughout the entire day. Workers only realized that little Sofia was not on the premises when her mother arrived shortly before 4:00 p.m. to pick her up. A search immediately began, and the child was found unconscious inside the parked vehicle, right next to the nursery facility.

Portugal: Little Sofia was left on the bus from 8:00 a.m.
According to the Portuguese news agency Lusa, 18-month-old Sofia boarded the school bus at around 8:00 a.m. on Thursday morning to be transported to her nursery. For reasons that remain unknown and are currently under investigation by the relevant authorities, the little girl was never taken off the bus with the other children and remained inside the vehicle. The bus was parked near the nursery facility, with no one realizing the child was still inside.
Sofia’s absence was not recorded either upon the children’s arrival or at any point during the nursery’s operating hours. For nearly eight hours, no one searched for Sofia, contacted her family, or checked the school bus. The tragic discovery was made when her mother arrived at the nursery to collect her daughter and was told the child was not there.
Nursery staff rushed immediately to the bus and found the little girl unresponsive. Police units, volunteer firefighters, a mobile emergency medical and resuscitation unit, and the Emergency Psychological Intervention Mobile Unit of the National Institute of Medical Emergencies were all called to the scene.
Investigation launched into how the child was forgotten on the bus
Rescuers made every effort to revive the child, but were unsuccessful, and her death was pronounced at the scene. Sofia’s mother and relatives required psychological support, while the local community remains devastated by the circumstances under which a child who had been routinely transported to her nursery lost her life.
The investigation has been taken over by Portugal’s Judiciary Police, who are tasked with determining how the little girl was never unloaded from the bus, why the vehicle was not checked after the route ended, and why her absence was not noticed during the children’s roll call. Investigators are also examining whether the required safety and attendance protocols were followed by the driver, the accompanying staff, and the nursery workers.
According to a police source speaking to Lusa, inspectors and forensic officers arrived at the scene and began collecting statements and evidence. Authorities are examining the school bus, transport and attendance records, and the actions of all those involved, in order to fully reconstruct the sequence of events and determine whether criminal or administrative liability should be assigned in connection with the death of 18-month-old Sofia.
