Greece is entering a heatwave starting Sunday, July 19, with the heat wave lasting through Wednesday, July 22 and temperatures reaching up to 42 degrees Celsius in some areas, according to meteorologist and New Democracy MP Giannis Kallianos, speaking exclusively to parapolitika.gr.
“A moderate-intensity heatwave is on its way. It will last four days, from Sunday through Wednesday,” he stated, noting that the peak of the phenomenon is expected on Monday and Tuesday, July 20 and 21 respectively. As he explained, the highest temperatures will be recorded in the mainland regions of the country. Specifically, the mercury will reach 40°C in Central Macedonia, 42°C in Thessaly, Central Sterea, Boeotia and Western Sterea, while in the Eastern Peloponnese temperatures will touch 41 to 42 degrees Celsius.
For the Attica region, Kallianos estimated that temperatures will hover between 39 and 40 degrees, clarifying that the capital will not find itself at the epicenter of the highest readings. Referring to the duration of the phenomenon, he noted that this is a three-to-four-day heat wave and not a prolonged heatwave event.
Weather: Sharp temperature drop expected gradually from Wednesday
According to the meteorologist, from Wednesday, July 22, temperatures will begin to ease in Western and Northern Greece, while heat will persist in Attica and the Aegean. A noticeable cooldown across the entire country is expected from Thursday, July 23.
As for winds, during the heatwave, winds of 5 to 6 Beaufort will blow across the Aegean and 4 to 5 Beaufort in Attica. However, as Giannis Kallianos warned, the risk of wildfires will remain elevated, as even at these wind intensities, the extremely high temperatures create particularly dangerous conditions.
Finally, he noted that following the temperature drop, northerly winds are likely to strengthen, though he clarified that this outlook will become clearer in the coming days.
