An unprecedented case has caused outrage across Germany: a trans neo-Nazi has been placed in a women’s prison. The individual in question is Marla-Svenja Liebich — formerly known as Sven Liebich — who was extradited from the Czech Republic to Germany. The decision has sparked fierce controversy, amid strong suspicions that the inmate deliberately exploited new gender recognition legislation to secure more favorable detention conditions.

Germany: outrage over trans neo-Nazi placed in women’s prison
The 55-year-old had fled abroad to avoid serving her sentence. Following her identification and arrest, she was extradited to Germany, where authorities suspect she “abused Germany’s gender self-identification law” in order to secure more favorable conditions of detention, away from male prison facilities. The case has reignited debate over the limits of how the relevant legislation should be applied.
According to a statement by Benedikt Beurtsen, a spokesperson for the local prosecutor’s office, Marla-Svenja Liebich — formerly Sven Liebich — was transferred to a women’s prison in the city of Chemnitz. “She was cooperative,” and prison management is “examining how she will serve her sentence.”

A well-known far-right figure in eastern Germany
Liebich is a well-known far-right figure who has been active in eastern Germany for decades. She disappeared last August after failing to report to prison to begin serving an 18-month sentence imposed for defamation and incitement to racial hatred. In April, she was arrested in western Czech Republic on the basis of a European Arrest Warrant. Czech authorities rejected all of her requests to avoid extradition.
In late 2024, the then-Sven Liebich had legally changed gender, declaring herself a woman, following an amendment to the relevant law that simplified this process in official records. The move was widely seen as intended to mock Germany’s gender self-identification law, passed by former Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government and which came into force in November 2024.
The current government of Chancellor Friedrich Merz has announced it will review the law, according to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency. In 2022, Sven Liebich disrupted an LGBTQ+ Pride march in the city of Halle, reportedly calling participants “parasites of society,” according to activists.
