Authorities are investigating the route and identity of the drone discovered in the Vasilika area of Lefkada, with the case now at the center of ongoing investigations. The unmanned aircraft has been placed under examination by the Armed Forces, who are tasked with determining its place of manufacture, technical specifications and operational capabilities, as well as providing answers regarding its contents.
According to information reported by ERT, the case is being evaluated as particularly serious, as the drone may pose a threat not only to free navigation, but also to recreational boats operating in the Mediterranean, as well as to coastal areas.
Investigators are examining whether the drone was intended to target ships carrying Russian oil in the wider Mediterranean region, a coast guard source reported. The source noted that the vessel may have been part of a mission involving such drones or may have deviated from its course after a signal malfunction.
Mega, citing sources from the investigation, notes that the drone lost its direction. Four pages of handwritten notes related to its wiring and operation were found inside. The same sources indicate that one scenario suggests the drone was targeting Russian ships operating in the southern Mediterranean, however remote control was lost.
The discovery of the drone in the Ionian Sea captured the attention of international media, including BBC and Reuters, which carried the story. The British outlet’s article was titled “Greece investigates mysterious sea drone found in Ionian Sea.” It described the incident, while noting that the drone could have been targeting the “shadow” Russian fleet.
