A recovery operation of a dead crocodile in the town of Komatipoort in the Mpumalanga province, South Africa, has evolved into a thriller. Inside the reptile’s stomach, they found a hotel owner, as confirmed by DNA tests, along with six pairs of shoes. Local authorities are conducting an investigation to determine if they are connected to other missing persons.
Shock from the identification of the unfortunate hotel owner mauled by the crocodile
The recovery operation of the crocodile, which had been killed and transported by helicopter with the assistance of police divers, brought to light a horrific scene, as inside the reptile’s stomach they found an unfortunate hotel owner who had been mauled, along with six pairs of shoes that are not connected to the victim.
Specifically, authorities located the bones of 59-year-old Gabriel Batista inside the stomach of the half-ton reptile, as revealed by DNA tests that were conducted. The unfortunate man had been swept away by rushing waters and had been considered missing since then, according to the Daily Mail.
Besides the unfortunate hotel owner, six pairs of shoes were also found in the reptile’s stomach. Authorities are trying to determine if these are connected to other missing locals who use the bridge, which often floods, either on foot or by car and were swept away by the rushing waters.
The hotel owner’s disappearance and the shocking testimony of the police officer who retrieved the crocodile
Last Monday, the unfortunate 59-year-old attempted to cross a flooded bridge with his car to reach his hotel and bar located on the opposite bank, while the river level was rising. However, strong currents pushed his car off the bridge onto the rocks, and it is estimated that the businessman got out of the vehicle to try to reach safe ground on foot.
According to the Daily Mail, authorities believe he was swept away by the rushing waters, resulting in the crocodile devouring him. Police and rangers reported that dozens of reptiles use the muddy river islands and sandy banks to lie down and wait for victims who get swept away.
The testimony of police diving team commander Johan “Pottie” Potgieter, who volunteered to retrieve the dead crocodile, is shocking. It should be noted that previously, the reptile had been killed by a marksman aboard a police helicopter. As for how they tracked it down, drone footage confirmed shortly after Batista’s disappearance that this particular crocodile showed signs of recent feeding.
“My team has been retrieving bodies from local rivers in this area of South Africa for a long time, so we know crocodile behavior. Through a drone we studied several crocodiles on an island 60 meters away from the bridge and identified a specific crocodile that we were 100% sure had devoured the man. This crocodile wasn’t moving under the sun and showed typical signs of recent feeding, as it had a huge belly and remained out of the water. It made no attempt to move despite the noise from the drones or our helicopter above, nor did it show any tendency to seek food, so we were certain it was this crocodile,” the commander said characteristically.
At the same time, he emphasized that “they assigned me the job, put the safety harness on me and the noise from the gunshot and helicopter lowering me drove away the other crocodiles. There were so many things that could have gone wrong and the rope essentially lowered me right onto the crocodile’s snout, so I was somehow hoping it was really dead. There were two crocodiles nearby watching as I put the safety belt around the dead crocodile’s waist, secured it under the front legs and tightened the strap. Then I signaled the helicopter and it lifted me immediately, leaving behind many large crocodiles.”
