Amid an atmosphere of devotion and magnificent splendor, the Resurrection of the Lord was celebrated once again this year in every region of Greece. Thousands of faithful gathered in churches across the country to chant “Christ is Risen,” while fireworks turned night into day everywhere. The Holy Fire arrived at “Eleftherios Venizelos” Airport at 7:25 PM and after a brief ceremony there, was transported to the Dependency of the Holy Sepulchre in Plaka. Simultaneously, through flights to airports across the country, the Holy Fire was carried to every corner of the nation for the Resurrection Service.
On the afternoon of Holy Saturday, Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophilos proclaimed “Come receive the Light” during the Holy Fire ceremony at the Church of the Resurrection. In a festive atmosphere, more than 2,500 faithful were able to enter the area with special wristbands provided by authorities to witness the Holy Fire ceremony. The Patriarch emerged from the Holy Sepulchre at 2:15 PM carrying 33 candles, one for each year Jesus lived on Earth, as dictated by the ritual.
