A particularly important meeting took place last Saturday at Alexis Tsipras‘ headquarters on Amalias Street. More than twenty officials – both new and veteran – gathered to discuss all organizational details of the party, as well as who will represent the new political entity in the media. Among the officials who participated in the meeting was former PASOK member Antonis Saoulidis, who recently resigned from the Charilaou Trikoupi party stating that he is not abandoning his ideas and values: “I am leaving a mechanism that has ceased to serve them.”
The significant aspect of this development is that former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras appeared to declare to his interlocutors that everything must be ready by the end of April for any eventuality. “Everything” means that all positions and views on all issues must be recorded, while organizationally all pending matters must be resolved.
Tsipras “sees” snap election announcement even within 2026
Alexis Tsipras’ stance shows that, despite the fact that he himself wishes to announce the new political entity sometime in September, he cannot dismiss the possibility that the Prime Minister might call elections even within 2026, as the problems the country will face due to the war will be numerous.
Meanwhile, discussions continue regarding how cooperation with MPs and officials from SYRIZA and New Left will take shape. Many from the Koumoundourou party insist that Socrates Famellos should take an initiative and engage in dialogue with the former Prime Minister about both his own future and that of the party.
The SYRIZA president continues, however, his tours throughout Greece. In this context, he visited Langadas as part of his tour of Northern Greece. There, referring to the measures announced by the government, he stated: “Mr. Mitsotakis neither wants nor can implement measures for a better prospect” and added: “The Easter table will be 20% more expensive than last year, while reaching triple the cost from 2019. And this is the footprint of the high prices that Mr. Mitsotakis has created. Because some people speculate and earn a lot. DEI, banks, and large oligopolies make billions.” “In markets across Greece, two harsh realities collide. Very low wages, meaning small income, whether we’re talking about retirees, workers, or farmers. That’s why we’re in last place in Europe’s purchasing power,” he continued. At the same time, he called for elections because Kyriakos Mitsotakis “neither wants nor can” implement measures for a better prospect.
Regarding the OPEKEPE scandal, he emphasized: “The Prime Minister, with extreme hypocrisy, is trying to escape the crucial question: Who was responsible for the OPEKEPE scandal? Who was responsible for the wiretapping? Who was responsible for the cover-up in the Tempe crime? Who is responsible for all these scandals that are revealed daily? Because the government is a government of scandals and defendants. He tried to imply that his problem is the MPs, meaning the MPs of his own party, because all the case files gather in his party. So I tell him clearly, why are his ministers also being investigated for so many serious violations: It’s a government of defendants and a parliamentary group of defendants.”
And he concluded: “Therefore, as soon as possible, there should be the broadest support for the motion of no confidence that SYRIZA-PS has submitted to the public sphere, because we must remove them.”
