According to the announcement, individuals on social networks and media directed sarcastic and offensive expressions at Turkish police officers. Specifically, the phrase “you right back, me left back” was reportedly heard, which undermines the seriousness of law enforcement work. Authorities believe such expressions could harm public order. For this reason, prosecution of suspects is being considered under Article 301/2 of the Turkish Criminal Code regarding public insult to state police.
The attack
It should be recalled that an alarm was raised in Istanbul after 12 noon on Holy Tuesday (07/04). Specifically, as reported by Reuters, gunshots were fired near the Israeli consulate in the Besiktas area. As Turkish Interior Minister Mustafa Cifci emphasized: “Three individuals who engaged in armed conflict with our police officers on duty in front of the Yapı Kredi Plaza building blocks in Istanbul were neutralized. Two of our hero police officers were slightly wounded.
