Scenarios about the resignation of New Left president Alexis Charitsis from his position are multiplying daily. Many claim that the leader of the New Left has already made his decisions and it’s a matter of days before announcing them. As those in the know say, in early April, when the New Left Central Committee is expected to convene, Alexis Charitsis will not be the rapporteur, as all signs point to his intention to resign from his position.
Obviously, this move is connected to scenarios of creating a new party by Alexis Tsipras. Alexis Charitsis, like Efi Achtsioglou and Nasos Iliopoulos, is among the New Left MPs who all indications suggest will join forces with Alexis Tsipras’ party. Obviously, this process will also involve a series of other issues, such as which and how many of the Patission Street MPs will want to follow Alexis Tsipras.
Alexis Charitsis’ views are in minority across all New Left bodies
Many argue, however, that Alexis Charitsis should have opened the exit door from his party’s leadership long ago, since in reality his views are in the minority across all party bodies. His position on cooperation with Alexis Tsipras found no impressive response within the party, while at the New Left congress the climate against the former prime minister was clearly hostile. Everything indicated, in fact, that the president’s proposal, which spoke of cooperation with Alexis Tsipras, would not pass if there hadn’t been a last-minute compromise proposal, which naturally had no such reference.
Tsipras would like to have Charitsis by his side
The truth is, however, that Alexis Charitsis is among the figures that Alexis Tsipras would like to have by his side, given that the New Left leader is low-key, hardworking and not at all confrontational. Information even suggests that he has been in contact with Alexis Tsipras for some time, as well as with other figures from the former prime minister’s circle.
New Left: Gabriel Sakellaridis gains ground
The characteristics that Alexis Tsipras appreciates in the New Left president were not particularly valued within his party. Inevitably, the party secretary Gabriel Sakellaridis has gained ground, appearing to be very far from Alexis Tsipras’ center-left turn. Moreover, figures like Euclid Tsakalotos, Panos Skourletis and Nikos Filis appear to trust him in what he says and does.
It’s worth noting, however, that New Left officials claim ignorance about Alexis Charitsis’ intentions and point out that everything is part of the political game.
