Developments in the Middle East are rapidly unfolding following a new escalation of tensions centered on Iran, with the Greek government closely monitoring the situation with heightened concern. In this context, according to the Foreign Ministry, crisis management mechanisms are being immediately activated, while the competent authorities remain on standby to protect Greek citizens and national interests in the region.
Foreign Ministry announcement regarding developments in the Middle East
The Greek Government is closely and anxiously monitoring developments in Iran and the broader Middle East region.
The Foreign Ministry has activated the Crisis Management Unit to provide consular assistance to those in need, while Greek diplomatic missions in the disputed areas remain on standby.
We call on Greek citizens to be particularly careful and to maintain contact with our embassies and consulates. If required, there will be a coordinated repatriation operation.
We place special emphasis on ensuring the protection of free navigation in the region.
The Foreign Minister is in constant communication with Foreign Ministers of allied countries regarding the developments. It is common ground that controlling the nuclear and ballistic program, so that Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons, is a necessary prerequisite for stability and peace in the region.
The protection of civilian populations, as well as respect for international law and citizens’ rights, must be a primary concern.
All related issues will be addressed at the emergency meeting of the Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defense this afternoon.
