Giorgos Gerapetritis: Full statement from Geneva
Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis made the following statement from Geneva: “Today marks 4 years since the Russian attack on Ukraine, which led to hundreds of thousands of deaths. It is important today to unite our voices against aggression, against all forms of revisionism. To unite our forces for peace in the region, so that we finally have positive results in Ukraine.
Today I was in Geneva, at the 61st Session of the Human Rights Council. I had the opportunity to address the Assembly, as well as to present Greece’s National Strategy on preventing violence against children and child-friendly justice. The presentation was warmly received by a significant audience of UN General Assembly member states, UN officials, as well as Council of Europe representatives.
Greece, as an elected member of the UN Security Council, undertakes a series of initiatives and in its capacity as the presiding country in the Committee for the Protection of Children in Armed Conflicts, so that children are not victims of human violence, human aggression, human greed.
I had the opportunity to speak with High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, to declare Greece’s conviction in favor of international multilateralism. International organizations must have an active presence, especially during periods of very major crises plaguing the planet: armed conflicts, climate crisis, all those conditions that make today’s reality bleak.
I also had the opportunity to speak with Lebanon’s Foreign Minister and exchange views on peace and stability in the region. Greece, as Lebanon’s supporter, has provided significant, real assistance to the Lebanese state, so that it can resiliently see the next day.
Greece is present in Middle East developments. Lebanon is a neighboring country of the European Union. We will be present both in reconstruction and certainly in every humanitarian aid effort.
From Geneva we will travel to the United States, where I will have the opportunity to meet with the U.S. Secretary of State, at a critical juncture for international reality, where processes and efforts for peace on all fronts are underway. We will have the opportunity to exchange views. Greece is at the forefront of all international initiatives and will continue to exercise its active foreign policy”.
