The Municipality of Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni has been declared in a State of Emergency, as the passage of severe weather left behind incalculable destruction, with the Vari area receiving the most devastating blow. Aerial drone footage from Orange Press Agency reveals shocking scenes of an area literally buried under mud.

The intensity of the storm, during which massive amounts of water fell for hours, caused streams to overflow and roads to transform into raging torrents. The road network has suffered severe damage, with Aegean Street cut off in multiple locations, while in other areas the road has completely collapsed, creating dangerous cracks in the pavement.

The scenes of vehicles are heartbreaking, as many were swept away and buried under tons of mud, rocks and debris, while others ended up trapped in ditches and next to power poles. The destruction extended to residents’ properties, as muddy waters invaded house yards, while characteristic of the intensity of the phenomena is the footage showing a residential swimming pool completely filled with mud. Fire department crews and heavy municipal vehicles are already on site working to restore accessibility amid the chaos left behind by the natural disaster.
