Whether Pandora’s box has been opened for the Presidency in Cyprus and the 2028 elections remains to be seen, but a video published on platform X raises allegations of financial irregularities regarding Nikos Christodoulides’ election campaign. Just as with Turkey’s Defense Ministry announcement about the event in occupied territories, these footage clips, thoroughly analyzed in a report by sigmalive.gr, emerge one day after Cyprus assumed the EU Council Presidency.

Two of the three people appearing in the video are close allies of Nikos Christodoulides. According to the footage, the material is far from official, having been leaked. The video’s “protagonists” allegedly don’t know they’re being recorded. The video features Presidential Office chief Charalambos Charalambous, former minister and presidential advisor Georgios Lakkotrypis, and businessman Georgios Chrysochos, CEO of Cyfield. There are also individuals not shown on camera who are presented as investors.
Cyprus: The funding and cash payments
Sigmalive.gr reports: “Central to the conversations is campaign financing and maximum permitted limits. In a characteristic excerpt, Georgios Lakkotrypis is heard saying, in general reference to presidential elections, that the financing limit is around one million euros and that to exceed it, ‘sometimes they must rely on cash.’ The comment, as recorded, is not accompanied by specific connections to persons or proven actions, but is part of a theoretical discussion.
In another part of the video, Mr. Charalambous allegedly describes generally how access to the Presidential Palace works regarding investors, using formulations that suggest informal communication. ‘We are the main contacts here at the Palace, next to the President,’ he is heard saying. He adds that if someone is interested, they can approach the President by declaring intention to implement activities and having money, which could be presented as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) contributions.
References to Cyfield and proximity to the President
Cyfield CEO Mr. Chrysochos, in a transcribed excerpt, is heard talking about his close relationship with the President. ‘If I call him now, he’ll answer,’ he allegedly says, while elsewhere adding: ‘He’s like my girlfriend.’ The same speaker is heard declaring: ‘I can speak to him freely. I see him every two weeks.’ He also adds that he doesn’t meet him publicly to avoid creating impressions that ‘that’s why he helps him.’
Unknown recording circumstances
According to SigmaLive sources, the video content is known to the people appearing in it, while it’s not excluded – according to the same journalistic reports – that there may be actions or complaints filed with relevant authorities.
So far, it’s unknown who recorded the video or under what exact circumstances the recording was made. The report is published in the public interest, with explicit emphasis that SigmaLive does not endorse the claims heard in the material.
