In a 40-minute video conference, outgoing director-general of the BBC, Tim Davie, addressed staff, acknowledging mistakes among other issues and emphasizing that the organization will overcome this difficult period. At the same time, he called on employees to “fight for the journalism” of the organization, following “difficult days” that included political pressures and criticism over the Panorama documentary about Donald Trump. “We must fight for our journalism,” he stated characteristically, noting that although mistakes were made, he remains “proud” of his team. “We have made some mistakes that have cost us,” Davie admitted, referring to the issue with the editing of Donald Trump’s speech. However, Davie emphasized that “BBC journalists do excellent work” and that he has “absolutely no complaints or regrets” about his tenure as head.

“The BBC is in a very strong position”
He also spoke about the reasons for his resignation, mentioning among others: the exhausting nature of the role and the pressures that followed criticism over the Panorama documentary. Nevertheless, he expressed optimism about the organization’s future, pointing out that “the current government supports public institutions” and that the BBC is “in a very strong position.”
During the same video conference, which was also attended by Board Chairman Samir Shah, it was clarified that no timeline has yet been set for Davie’s departure or for selecting his successor, although the Board is already “in a succession process.” Davie also spoke warmly about News Head Deborah Turness, who submitted her resignation on Sunday (09/11).
At the same time, he clarified that this was not a “farewell speech,” emphasizing that he will remain in his position until there is a “smooth transition” agreed upon with the Board. “We must continue our work, support each other and send a clear message outward: it was a difficult period, two people left, but we are moving forward,” he stated characteristically.
