New York City Fire Department Chief Robert Tucker submitted his resignation on Wednesday morning, just hours after Zohran Mamdani was elected as the city’s mayor, according to New York Post sources.

Tucker, who held the position for just over a year, is expected to officially step down on December 19 and then return to leading the private security company he managed before joining Eric Adams’ city administration.

News of his resignation broke at the same time the FDNY chief was preparing to fly to Israel, where he had scheduled meetings with the fire service leadership there. The reasons for his resignation have not yet been disclosed. However, Mamdani has faced criticism for his positions regarding Israel and has even been labeled as antisemitic.
