Dedicated to Zohran Mamdani, the newly elected mayor of New York City who becomes the first Muslim and youngest mayor of the city in many years, is the new cover of The New Yorker for the November 17, 2025 issue. Artist Edel Rodriguez chose to depict him on the subway, highlighting his connection with citizens: “Mamdani spent much of his campaign wandering around the city—visiting corner stores, talking to taxi drivers, asking questions, dancing and laughing,” according to Rodriguez. “He showed everyone that he’s one of them.”
New Yorker on Mamdani: New York’s new chapter begins
In a New Yorker article, it’s noted that Mamdani won the trust of New Yorkers in an election with the highest turnout in fifty years, proposing a less corrupt politics and offering a message of hope without “stains.”
As he said in a discussion in October: “What I lack in experience, I make up for with integrity.”
Mamdani’s election signals a change in New York, the magazine notes, bringing Muslims and South Asians to the center of the political stage for the first time, overturning old perceptions about coalitions and voter mobilization. New York’s new chapter begins, and Mamdani promises to test whether the city can achieve good, or at least better, governance, it concludes.
