Heavy rainfall swept through New York on Thursday (30/10), causing the death of two people, according to a statement by Mayor Eric Adams. The storms created problems for airline flights, while the meteorological service issued warnings for potential flooding in certain areas.

News media reported episodes of flooding and damage, while officials at the city’s JFK, LaGuardia and Newark airports announced that there were problems with scheduled flights.

“This storm broke rainfall records for October 30th,” Adams wrote on X, adding that much of the rain that, according to forecasts, was supposed to fall over several hours, fell within a 10-minute period in the afternoon.

Meteorological authorities announced a record 4.7 inches of rainfall in Central Park, while 5.31 inches fell at LaGuardia Airport and 5.05 inches at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. Additionally, the National Weather Service issued coastal flood warnings for parts of the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens.
