A family tragedy appears to be behind the knife attack that occurred yesterday, Tuesday, targeting the newly elected mayor of Herdecke, Germany, Iris Stalzer. The 57-year-old was found bloodied at her home in Herdecke, North Rhine-Westphalia. According to police, she suffered 13 stab wounds to her abdomen and back and was airlifted to a hospital in Bochum. What is particularly noteworthy is that the 57-year-old identified her 17-year-old daughter as responsible for her injuries.

The 17-year-old daughter of mayor Stalzer, Germany – “We assume she is responsible”
The 57-year-old mayor, who is now out of danger, accused her 17-year-old adopted daughter of causing her severe injuries. Meanwhile, at a press conference, a police spokesperson revealed that the mayor’s 17-year-old daughter contacted police about an emergency incident around midday Tuesday. The girl claimed over the phone that her mother had been seriously injured during a robbery. Emergency services ultimately discovered that Stalzer had sustained multiple knife wounds. “Her life is no longer in danger,” the police spokesperson stated.
Prosecutor Holdorn declared: “Based on evidence at the crime scene, we assume the daughter is responsible for the injuries.” From a legal perspective, he now considers the case as “dangerous bodily harm” rather than attempted murder. The head of the criminal investigation service, Jens Rautenberg, reported that two knives were found in a room of the family home, along with clothing believed to have been worn during the attack. Stalzer has a 15-year-old adopted son and a 17-year-old adopted daughter.

The timeline
The 57-year-old was found bloodied at her home in Herdecke, North Rhine-Westphalia. According to police, she suffered 13 stab wounds to her abdomen and back and was airlifted to a hospital in Bochum. According to BILD, the alleged murder weapons – a kitchen knife and another blade – were found in the bedroom of her 15-year-old adopted son, while authorities’ suspicions focus on the politician’s 17-year-old adopted daughter. The knife, bearing blood traces, was reportedly found in the boy’s backpack. However, blood-stained clothing was also discovered. According to BILD, investigators at the mayor’s home in Herdecke also discovered that large bloodstains had apparently been removed before the emergency call was made. However, these were revealed again through forensic investigations.
Investigators also determined that cleanup attempts had been made before the emergency call, yet bloodstains were rediscovered using scientific methods. According to estimates, Stalzer may have been lying severely wounded in an armchair while attempts were made to erase traces of the attack.
The mayor named her daughter
Investigators confirmed that the bloody incident occurred inside the family home, where both adopted children were present at the time. Both were taken to police for questioning. As stated by the head of the Homicide Division, Jens Rautenberg, Stalzer herself, from the hospital, named her 17-year-old daughter as responsible for the attack. The crime scene appears to have been the house’s basement. According to the same sources, the mother-daughter relationship had been strained in the past. Last summer, a serious incident had occurred between them. Tensions apparently also existed with the 15-year-old son. On Wednesday, one day after the attack, police authorities continued their searches at the mayor’s home in the Herdecke-Herrentis area.
