The upcoming sequel to the legendary film “The Social Network” is preparing to bring major changes and surprises for Facebook and cinema fans alike. Jesse Eisenberg, who earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his portrayal of Mark Zuckerberg, will not return to his role. Taking his place will be Jeremy Strong, Emmy winner for his role in the series “Succession,” bringing a new dimension to the character of Facebook’s co-founder. The new film, titled “The Social Reckoning,” is expected to combine fiction and documentary elements, focusing on the platform’s dark aspects and the pressure of profit over ethics.
New chapter for “Social Network”
The sequel will bring new faces and stories to the forefront that reveal the challenges and scandals behind the popular social media platform. Aaron Sorkin, creator and screenwriter of the original film, will write the script for the new production and also take on directing duties, basing his work on the Wall Street Journal’s investigation “The Facebook Files.” The film will present, among other things, the 2021 report that revealed how the platform knew it negatively affects teenagers’ mental health and contributes to misinformation spread, while simultaneously promoting profit over safety.
Jeremy Strong takes on Mark Zuckerberg role
Jeremy Strong will portray Mark Zuckerberg, while alongside him will be Jeremy Allen White, Oscar-winning actress from “Anora” Mikey Madison, and comedian Bill Burr. Madison will play Frances Haugen, the whistleblower who revealed the company’s confidential information to the Wall Street Journal, while White will embody Jeff Horwitz, the journalist who broke the story. Production is expected to begin next month, aiming to bring audiences a compelling, contemporary, and deeply political drama. The original “The Social Network” garnered eight Oscar nominations and won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Sorkin’s script, while the worldwide box office reached $226 million. With the new film, the dark sides of technology and the dynamics of one of the world’s largest social media platforms are expected to be highlighted.
