Philippine authorities today evacuated approximately 400,000 residents and confirmed the deaths of at least three people, following the impact of the severe tropical storm Bualoi on the archipelago, which continues to be battered by typhoon Ragasa. In a press conference, Claudio Yugot, head of the civil protection service in the Bicol region of southern Luzon, stated that the three deaths resulted from wall collapses and uprooted trees during storm Bualoi.

Indeed, related videos shared on social media and verified by AFP show people using boats or walking through waist-deep water to move through flooded streets further south, in the Visayas islands, in central Philippines. Thousands of people remain displaced after the passage of typhoon Ragasa, which swept through the northern tip of the country and caused the deaths of at least nine people earlier this week.
These storms occur at a time when public anger in the country is rising due to a corruption scandal involving non-existent flood control projects, which allegedly cost taxpayers billions of dollars. Each year, at least 20 storms or typhoons hit or approach the Philippines, with the country’s poorest areas typically suffering the most damage. Scientists say climate change is causing more frequent and intense extreme weather events worldwide.
