A 75-year-old woman in Japan has been arrested after keeping her daughter’s body in a freezer for 20 years, police reported today (September 25). On Tuesday, the woman went to police accompanied by a family member to report that she had been keeping a body in her freezer and that “it was her daughter” who was born in 1975, a Japanese police spokesperson told AFP. Officers who went to her home, located in the northeastern section of Tokyo, found the body of a woman, curled up, dressed in a t-shirt and underwear inside the freezer. Police explained that “the body was in an advanced state of decomposition” and that a forensic examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
Japan: The smell of the body filled the entire house, so I bought a freezer and put it there
The woman, who was arrested as a suspect for abandoning a corpse, told police investigators that the smell had spread throughout the house and that she then bought the freezer to put her daughter’s body there, according to a police spokesperson. “Twenty years ago, the smell of the body filled the entire house, so I bought a freezer and put it there,” the 75-year-old specifically stated.
The woman, who had other children, had been living alone after her husband’s death a few weeks ago, the police spokesperson clarified.
