Major destruction was caused by typhoon Ragasa – one of the strongest in recent years – after its devastating sweep through Hong Kong, Taiwan, Philippines and the southern coast of China, resulting in extensive damage to roads, hotels, and infrastructure.
Deaths in Taiwan and Philippines from typhoon assault
In Taiwan, 14 people lost their lives in a flooded town, while 10 deaths were reported in the Philippines. The powerful winds of Ragasa woke Hong Kong residents in the early morning hours, according to the Associated Press, and many went online to describe the flooding and damage. Strong winds broke sections of a pedestrian bridge roof and toppled hundreds of trees throughout the city. A boat crashed into the shore, breaking a series of glass railings along the waterfront.
Areas around certain rivers and coastal roads flooded, including bike paths and playgrounds. In many waterfront restaurants, furniture was scattered chaotically by the winds.
Shocking videos from Hong Kong capture the moment when a massive wave violently invades a hotel, breaking its glass doors.

The scenes unfolded at the Fullerton Ocean Park hotel in Aberdeen, where guests can be heard screaming and clinging to furniture trying to avoid the rushing water, which completely destroyed the interior. Some were swept away by the force of the current and ended up on the ground.

The typhoon, dubbed the “King of Storms,” is the strongest tropical cyclone of 2025 and is expected to hit Chinese coasts during the day. In Taiwan, deaths have reached 15, while 124 people are missing after dam overflow in eastern Hualien County, which released torrential waters causing extensive flooding.

The Hong Kong Meteorological Observatory announced that typhoon Ragasa had maximum wind speeds near its center of approximately 195 km/h and passed about 100 kilometers south. In China, nearly two million residents evacuated their homes in Guangdong province. Schools, businesses and transportation closed in many cities, while the storm is expected to hit the coastal cities of Yangjiang and Zhanjiang tonight.
Ragasa’s fury created waves that exceeded the height of lighting columns on Hong Kong’s waterfront and churned up the sea along China’s southern coasts. It had previously devastated Taiwan and the Philippines, where 10 deaths were recorded.
Violent winds are blowing in Guangdong province, while in Hong Kong many areas flooded, causing damage and injuries. More than 60 people required medical assistance at the city’s hospitals.
