NATO sent a clear message to Moscow, making it clear that its response “to Russia’s reckless actions will remain strong,” regarding the violation of Estonia’s airspace by three armed Russian MiG-31 aircraft for more than ten minutes, which Moscow categorically denies. In a statement following the emergency session held on Tuesday (23/09), the alliance emphasizes, among other things, that “Russia bears full responsibility for these actions, which are escalatory, risk miscalculation and endanger lives. These actions must stop.” The statement also stresses: “We will further enhance our capabilities and strengthen our deterrent and defensive posture, including effective air defense.”
NATO warns of Article 5 activation
In stern language, the North Atlantic Council emphasizes that Russia “should be in no doubt: NATO and Allies will use, in accordance with international law, all necessary military and non-military means to defend and deter any threat from any direction. We will continue to respond in the manner, time and domain of our choosing. Our commitment to Article 5 remains ironclad.”
At the same time, NATO states that Alliance members will not be swayed by Russia’s irresponsible actions and will continue to support Ukraine.
