The critical goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels is under serious threat, as UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned about climate change.
“Planet on brink of collapse,” Guterres says about climate change
According to him, the planet is “on the brink of collapse” as new national plans for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, expected ahead of the COP30 Conference, may not meet the severity of the situation.
In statements to the French Press Agency, Guterres emphasized that the current situation requires urgent action and strong, ambitious national climate commitments. He stressed that the threat of the 1.5°C target collapsing is another reason to intensify international pressure for countries to submit “acceptable and decisive” contributions to the global fight against climate change.
