A technology cooperation agreement between the USA and the United Kingdom, focusing on Artificial Intelligence, was signed by Donald Trump and Keir Starmer during their meeting on Thursday afternoon, September 18, at Chequers alongside technology company leaders. During his remarks, Trump described his country’s economy as “possibly the strongest it has ever been,” adding that all companies want to be located there. Furthermore, he emphasized that the “precious friendship” between the US and the UK is growing stronger and thanked Starmer for his hard work on their new, historic agreement, saying it was an “honor” to participate in it.

Donald Trump: Bonds between US and UK are invaluable
“The bonds between our countries are invaluable, this relationship is a wonderful legacy and both governments are making these ties closer than ever,” the American president said at another point. Continuing his remarks, Trump mentioned that a year ago the US was in “serious difficulty,” while in a conversation – as he commented – the King of Saudi Arabia had told him: “Your country was dead a year ago and now you have the hottest country in the entire world.”
According to the American president, over $17 trillion has been invested in the US this year. “We have collected trillions of dollars from tariffs and these have proven incredible for our country,” he said, adding that he keeps American companies “happy, stable and healthy.” “We have never seen such investments, without tariffs we would have had only a small portion of these,” he continued.
Referring to the agreement signed by the two leaders, he emphasized that it will promote a series of other deals in the private sector. As he said, the American company X-energy and the British company Centrica – owner of British Gas – are proceeding with an agreement to install nuclear reactors throughout the United Kingdom. This had been “circulating” for years, Trump says, but now it is “finally” becoming reality.
Keir Starmer: Today’s agreement is the largest of its kind in British history
For his part, Keir Starmer emphasized that the United Kingdom and the US are leaders in sectors such as technology, finance, defense and energy. “Just look at what we’re achieving together today,” he said and continued: “Today’s agreement, with billions flowing to both sides of the Atlantic,” is “the largest of its kind in British history by far.”
According to Starmer, the agreement translates into investments that will change life in the United Kingdom and which will improve the economic situation of thousands of workers. “This shows the power of this partnership.”
According to the British Prime Minister, the US is the UK’s “largest trading partner,” while “together we support over 2.5 million jobs in both economies.” “We have with us the great and good of British and American businesses,” he continues, addressing the audience composed of business leaders.
On tariffs
In his speech, Keir Starmer also referred to the agreement reached earlier this year between the US and the UK regarding tariffs, welcoming it as a symbol of the close bilateral relationship. The two countries had rushed to negotiate almost immediately after Trump’s announcements on imposing additional tariffs on US trading partners, and the UK was the first to secure an agreement for their reduction, which was announced on May 8.
Specifically, Starmer secured a reduction in automotive tariffs from 27.5% to 10%, something that, as he said, saved the jobs of British workers at companies like Jaguar-Land Rover.
Today, the British Prime Minister hailed the negotiation result as a “win for both sides,” while Trump declared that the United Kingdom and the US have an “unbreakable bond.”
