Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew managed to secure a significant promise regarding the Halki Theological Seminary issue from US President Donald Trump, revealing details of their meeting that lasted more than half an hour in the Oval Office of the White House.
Speaking to journalists in a hotel room near the White House, the Patriarch emphasized that he raised the issue of the indefinite suspension of the Theological Seminary’s operations with the American president, expressing hope that “through the dialogue that has begun with the current administration, there will be a positive outcome.”
During the discussion, Trump committed that when he hosts Tayyip Erdogan at the White House, he will directly raise the issue of reopening the Seminary. Despite objections from the Turkish leadership, the American president appeared willing to advance the matter and requested that the patriarchal delegation prepare a detailed memorandum so that the White House can have a complete picture of the situation.
